Smoking And Facts

Image, Picture, smoking,
Smoking contains poisonous materials, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, Benzedrine, etc, which the smoker inhales in small proportions. Their harm accumulates in time, resulting in a gradual damage of the human organs and tissues.

Harms Of Smoking:
The harm that smoking does to the human body is undeniable. Any way did you know?
Every 8 seconds someone dies as a result of tobacco.

Smoking is a slow and for many a painful way to die.

Smoking is the one of the main cause of death every year.

Every time you smoke a cigarette, you are inhaling poisons.

Tobacco kills about 4.2 million people worldwide every year.

Are you aware that each cigarette you smoke contains 500 – 1000 additive chemicals?

Heart disease and strokes are much more common among smokers than non-smokers.

Studies show that smoking cuts the average persons life short by 7-8 years!

Women exposed to second hand smoke, either as adults or children, significantly diminished their chances of being able to have children.

Lung cancer is c aused by the tar and poisons found in tobacco smoke. Ninety-five per cent of lung cancer deaths are due directly to cigarette smoking.

Cigarettes smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals and more than 40 of those chemicals are carcinogenic (cancer causing) toxic substances.

It can also affect the skin. Many smokers have discoloured skin around their fingers caused by the cigarettes and also their complexions are affected. The smoke can also result in bad smell in the skin and hair
(Bad Breath and Smoking).

One of the main dangers of smoking is due to Nicotine. Nicotine is found naturally in tobacco. It has no odor and no color. It is, however, both physically and psychologically addictive, and it causes those who use it to want to smoke one cigarette after another.

Over the years a smoker will be more likely to develop respiratory ailments, thickening of the arteries, blood clots, cancer of the lung, cervix, larynx, mouth, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, and kidney, and emphysema, as well as exhibit symptoms such as reduced stamina, poor athletic performance, wheezing, coughing, dizziness, and nausea.

Even if you choose to smoke outside of your home or only smoke in your home when your children aren't there, you're still exposing them to a cocktail of lethal toxins. When you come into contact with your children, even if you're not smoking at the time, you're exposing them to the toxic tobacco particles that are in your hair and clothing.

There are so many health risks as; Depression, Snoring, Diabetes, Infertility on men and women, Thyroid Disease, Harmful effects on Bones and Joints.

Indeed The hazards of smoking to health are hard to count. Cancer, tuberculosis, heart attacks, asthma, coughing, premature birth, infertility, infections in the digestive system, high blood pressure, nervousness, mouth and teeth diseases, etc., are among the many health hazards that have been strongly linked to smoking.

Islam And Smoking:
This in itself is sufficient to prohibit smoking. Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people.
Allah says :
"And kill not yourselves. Undoubtedly, Allah is Merciful to you." Surah An-Nisaa : Ayat 29
"And spend in the way of Allah, and cast not yourself in destruction with your hand and be good-doers; no doubt! Good doers are the beloveds of Allah." Surah Al-Baqara : Ayat 195

And the Messenger Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) says:
"No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others."  (Ahmad and Ibn Maajah from Ibn Abbaas and Ubaadah)

It is scientifically proven that the exhaled smoke of the smoker is hazardous to non-smokers around him.

For the foregoing reasons and for reasons considered elsewhere, smoking is Haram or unlawful in Islam, hence smoking should be discouraged and finally banned in all Islamic countries.
Indeed self harming you body goes against Islam, eventhough your not committing a suicidal act. Harming the body in any way is unlawful in Islam. Here are some example's smoking, drinking, taking drugs all these categories goes against Islam why? Because they harm the body.

Allah will question you for ever single action you have committed in this world and ask you why did you commit this action.
Stop Smoking:
If you are a smoker then the above should give you some food for thought, the previously mentioned reasons will obviously encourage you to quit smoking. Think about your freedom and think who is trying to fool you all this time. It will not only prolong your life, but will give you back your health.

Quitting is different for everyone, so find an approach that will work for you. This may be stopping suddenly and totally or a more gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes you smoke each day. Set a date to quit  and stick to it. Make it sooner rather than later. If you are quitting by yourself, it is recommended that you stop smoking completely on your quit date.

Almost all smokers have some feelings of nicotine withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit:
Dizziness only last 1 to 2 days after quitting,
Cough, Chest tightness, dry mouth, sore throat, and nasal drip, Constipation and gas,
Impatience, depression and frustration,
Feelings of restlessness or boredom,
Anxiety, anger, feeling irritated and trouble concentrating,
Sleeping disorder, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep and having bad dreams or even nightmares,
Headaches, slower heart rate, tiredness.

After quitting you must do things that help you to deal with cravings and withdrawal:
1: Avoid people who are smoking. Don't hang out with the friends who smoke or don't go near the people who do. Don’t allow anyone to use tobacco in your home, car, or even while sitting next to you in a restaurant. Catch up with smoke-free friends.
2: Being active helps you a lot; keep yourself busy and occupied, go for walking (but not where smokers congregate), get exercising, pamper yourself, involve yourself in activities or hobbies.
3: Do something that keeps your hands and  mind busy, squeeze balls, pencils or paper, play a game on your computer. Read a book or magazine, listen to some music you love.
4: Find substitutes you can put in your mouth when you’re craving a cigarette. Good choices include mints, sugarless gum or hard candy, carrot or celery sticks, sunflower seeds or nuts. Brushing your teeth whenever you experience a craving.
5: Drink lots of water and fluids to help flush out the nicotine, toxins or other poisons from your body. Stay away from alcohol, drinking lowers your chance of success.
6: Avoid sugar and coffee as these tend to stimulate the desire for a cigarette.
7: Deep breathing is also useful. Breathe deeply and picture your lungs filling with fresh, clean air.
8: Encourage and motivate yourself by silently repeating the affirmation "I am a nonsmoker" will help you change your view of yourself.
9: Don't take your eyes off your goal. Remind yourself of your reasons for quitting and the benefits you’ll gain as an ex-smoker.
10: There are also medicines available on prescription, talk to your doctor about what would be best for you.
11: Also having support around you from your family and friends is important, because they can really help you. Your support group will look over you and know your goal of quitting smoking so as to reward you when you achieve it.

Once you have decided to quit smoking you will notice your health improving, the people you live with, especially children, will be healthier. If you are pregnant, you will improve your chances of having a healthy baby. Your taste buds will improve as will your sense of smell and your breathing will return to normal, although this will take some time as the lungs clean themselves gradually and it is a slow process.  Being able to really taste and enjoy your food again will help you to stay off the cigarettes for good.

  10. Agreed. The VERY reason for me why I don't engage in this habit is that it endangers the life of those I love. It is of greater poison to those around inhaling the smoke than the smoker--this sole reason is enough to "NO SMOKING".

  16. Well smoking is an addiction, so even if people know its bad for your health, there is still a biological (and psychological) dependancy there, I feel sorry for smokers. Im sure they know how stinky they are. Any advice for smokers would be to try and come off the nicotine bit by bit (less cigarettes each day/week), going cold turkey will most likely not last long. There are devices such as nicotine inhalers that will provide a small amount of nicotine to fight the craving, the dose of nicotine can be slowly reduced untill eventually you stop having cravings.

  21. I was a heavy smoker for a short time in my youth. I am so glad I stopped! I appreciated your connection between taking care of our bodies and Islam. I believe that the same would be true of many religions, certainly of Christianity and Buddhism. I'm sure if any smokers read your article they will be motivated to consider stopping.

  25. Cigarette smoking is deadly. People start this one during their schooling to show off and eventually end up addicted to it.
It's a health hazard and the second hand smoke has the worst effect on the people nearby inhaling the poison.
In the west, the smokers are to leave the area and smoke in the open. It's mandatory.
From Islamic point of view, it's haram.

    Well researched article ASMA!
